Pixar's Characters as 19th Century Toys

An article in The New York Times notes the use of a zoetrope-like device in the “Pixar: 20 Years of Animation” exhibit opening this week at the Museum of Modern Art (registration required). The device — inspired by a similar installation at the Studio Ghibli Museum in Tokyo — combines a strobe light and 3-D sculptures to produce the illusion of movement.
