Hit Korean Drama Gets Animated
Korea’s first animated series to be based on a domestic live-action television drama will premiere at the end of this month, the Korea Times reports. The drama on which the series is based, titled Daejanggeum or Jewel in the Palace, was wildly popular across Asia. An estimated 47 percent of the population of Hong Kong watched the drama’s final episode when it aired there in May.
Korean broadcaster MBC reportedly spent about 3 billion won ($2.9 million) on the 26-episode animated series. Talks are already underway to export the cartoon to Japan and China.
The historical drama follows a woman in Joseon-dynasty Korea (1392-1910) who following the death of her mother enters the royal palace as a cook, eventually rising to become a respected doctor to the king.
