TZ at SakuraCon: Tokyopop To Give "Princess Ai" Major July Push
Tokyopop representatives at SakuraCon last week outlined an ambitious line up of manhwa and manga titles for release, including RG Veda, Clamp no Kiseki, Sakura Taisen, Beck, BLAME!, Scrapped Princess, Earthian, Samurai Champloo, Kamikaze, Arcana, Tarot Cafe, The Dream World and Kanpai, a vampire manga from the creator of Gravitation.
Jetting quickly through their presentation in order to catch a flight back to Los Angeles, Tokyopop presenters said that the company’s originals division has been contacted by David Hien and Chuck Austin to do original comics. Tokypop also has a Sokora Refugees, MBQ, Bizenghast, War on Flesh and I Luv Halloween on tap. The company will also release a Richard A. Knaak/Myung-Jin Lee Warcraft comic along with a Van Von Hunter title that will have new content separate from the web series. On the international front, Tokyopop will be releasing a Japan-exclusive Star Wars manga.
A second volume of Princess Ai will get a major push in July. A Princess Ai cosplay contest at the San Diego Comic Con will be judged by a celebrity guest, and the winner will get a complete set of Princess Ai merchandise, which will include cell phone backgrounds, a calendar, a dozen different dolls and con-exclusive T-shirts.
Fruits Basket and Get Backers will be on an accelerated release path during the summer, but representatives cautioned that other manga titles will have their schedules slowed down in order to compensate.
The presenters also said that Tokyopop America has no immediate plans to license Ichigo Mashimaro, even though it has been licensed by Tokyopop Germany. They also noted that @Large, though originally conceived for the US market, has been doing better in Germany than America.
